Summer Update

July 23, 2008
By psouth hoops of Parkway South High School

The Patriots recently closed out another successful summer of basketball.  Over the summer many players made some big strides in their basketball game.  The summer officially kicked off with the annual camp at the high school.  Over 120 campers ranging from grades 4-12 were able to work on individual and team basketball skills.  The coaches remarked as to the high level of skill and competition that was being displayed at camp.  "It was our best camp yet," said Coach Shanfeld, varsity assistant coach.
Many high school players also attended the Illini team camp at the University of Illinois.  18 players on two varsity teams competed against some of the best teams that the state of Illinois and in particular the city of Chicago had to offer.  "It is always good to compete against the best to see how good you really are."  Said coach Stevens after his team went 6-4 in three days of competition.  Both teams had success and saw their teams getting better and better every game.
The varsity team also competed in the Vianney Summer League and the Meramec Summer Shoot-out.  The varsity team\'s summer record was a stellar 23-5, including a luxurious record of 17-1 against St. Louis teams.  South also went 10-1 without the aid of their all state player Ben Hoener who was busy traveling the nation playing basketball.  The Patriots remained unbeaten at Vianney winning 20 games straight over the two year existence of the league and went 7-1 at Meramec, good enough for second place.  Some standouts for the varsity this summer included, Scott and Kevin Pohle, Robert Adams, Mike Bertram, Joey Drago, Paulos Mengsteab, Chris Meador, Luke Andrea, Joey Drago, Alex Johnston, newcomers Ryan McCarthy and Mark Waller, and of course Ben Hoener.
